Dear Friends,
I want to share how I translate most of the French content on web, e.g., housing rental agencies, and how I write to them in French. (I always mention that I am using a dictionary and I dont know French, so please excuse my mistakes)
I think many of you know this tool, but again some novices like me dont.
If you have a google toolbar, click on the left google search button.
Alternative: Go to
Google websearch
Then click on "language tools" on right- written in small fonts. the direct link to this page is this
Then choose English to French or French to English in the translate text field drop down menu.
Then write what you want to be translated in the field or copy past on to the field.
Click on translate and VOILA!!
It works pretty well. |

| Oh yes, I forgot. There is a "translate this webpage" google tool too, but it is very slow. And for limited content, advertisements, I find it easier to use the translator tool. |

I have used these tools (there's one called babelfish as well), while these tools are good for the basic understanding, they also tend to do word to word translation. I mean, we can use these tools to understand the meaning of some big paragraph, but can't use the same translated text while writing to some native speaker.
Would be funny then  Have you tried to translate a big page from french to english, and tried to read the translated english content? 
Here is a piece of automatically translated text (from french to english) using the google engine -

Yes of course, what else can be expected from a machine generated translation?
I once read an article about how a writer put in The Gettysburg Address for spell and grammar check on MS word, and the interesting results it gave!!!
But for me, when I have nothing at hand, reading housing advert online is facilitated by these tools. And my short and sweet letter was once rewarded by a "bravo for writing in French" by a responder!!!
So something is better than nothing, I meant. |

Another neat tool to quickly translate a text or webpage is the FOXLINGO add-on in firefox. It is compatible with Firefox3.
