Hi friends,
Finally I am writing to thank all you wonderful people for helping me out and answering all the questions on this
forum. A special thanks to Sourav for starting this wounderful forum.
After a hundred thousands documents filed in the right order, we received a Celibacy certificate from the French
consulate in Mumbai who handled the whole process and were extremely helpful at each and every stage.
We got married under the Special Marriage Act 1954 at the Mumbai court on 17th August 2009 and it's been 7 beautiful
months of me still trying to open the bottle of french wine in the right way and my wife burning the chappati almost
every second day...But at the end of the day, it's all good and we are happy with new learning and experiences.
There are certain changes and tips I'd like to share which are as follows:
1). If getting married in India, make sure you get atleast 10 notarized copies of your marriage certifcat followed
by attestation from your local governing body. In my case, I had to get it done at the Mantralaya in Mumbai.
(After paying Rupees 2000, I got my Marriage cert. in 5 minutes and the very next day in the evening an agent
delivered the marriage certificate with 10 copies notarized and stamped at the Mantralaya)
2). It's a necessity to go to Delhi High Court at Patiala House and get your marriage certificate copies and
if possible, original Apostilied by the Ministry of External Affairs.
(Simply impossible to get it in one day..I had to go through an agent who charged like 1200 rupees per copy.
I gave him the documents at 10 in the morning and my work was done by 5 in the evening)
3). On submission of this apostiled copy of marriage certificate to the French consulate in Mumbai, my wife
and I received our Livret de FAmille within one month from the date of submission.
4). If your spouse plans to change the name, the servies are available with the respective French consulate in India
and that takes another 20 days. My wife wished to change her last name, and she received a new passport without
travelling out of Mumbai.
5). Indian citizens intending to marry a french citizen are no longer supposed to pass any medical tests
6). The French embassy accepts documents in English too. So, one does not need to translate the documents in French.
7). Marriage certificate of the Indian citizen's parents is asked. But, in my case, my parents were unsupportive
of the marriage and the French embassy was ok without any such documents.
At the end of the day, if you are in true love and desitned to be together..than no documents or government can
restrict you or your loved one from being together. _________________ Warm Regards
